About PPI

  • PPI (Pixels Per Inch): The number of pixels per inch, indicating display sharpness.
  • Retina Display: Apple's term for displays where pixels are not visible at normal viewing distance. Generally means 220+ PPI.
  • Dot Pitch: The distance between pixel centers. Higher PPI means smaller dot pitch.

📖 How to Use

  1. Enter the screen diagonal size in inches
  2. Select a resolution preset or enter custom resolution
  3. Presets: HD(720p), Full HD(1080p), QHD(1440p), 4K, 5K, 8K, etc.
  4. View PPI, aspect ratio, and grade results

Features

  • Various resolution presets available
  • Automatic PPI calculation
  • Aspect ratio display (16:9, 21:9, etc.)
  • PPI grade indicator (Retina-class or not)
  • Dot pitch calculation
  • Physical screen dimensions (width × height)
  • Device PPI comparison

📐 Formula

PPI = √(Width² + Height²) ÷ Diagonal (inches)

💡 How It Works

  • PPI (Pixels Per Inch) is the number of pixels in one inch, indicating display sharpness.
  • Same resolution on a larger screen means lower PPI; smaller screen means higher PPI.
  • Example: 27" 4K monitor is ~163 PPI, 14" MacBook Pro is ~254 PPI.
  • Apple's Retina Display standard is where pixels are not visible at normal viewing distance: ~110 PPI for monitors, 220 PPI for laptops, 326+ PPI for smartphones.
  • Dot pitch is calculated as 25.4mm ÷ PPI, representing physical distance between pixels.

FAQ

Q. Is higher PPI always better?

A. Higher PPI provides sharper images, but perception depends on viewing distance. 110 PPI is sufficient for monitors at 50cm, while smartphones need 300+ PPI as they're held close.

Q. What is Retina Display?

A. Apple's term for displays where individual pixels cannot be distinguished at normal viewing distance. Required PPI varies by device type.

Q. Why doesn't my 4K monitor look sharp?

A. Even 4K (3840×2160) at 32" or larger has PPI below 140, reducing sharpness. For sharp 4K, choose 27" or smaller.

Q. What is dot pitch?

A. Dot pitch is the distance between adjacent pixel centers (mm). 27" QHD is ~0.23mm, 27" 4K is ~0.155mm.

Q. What's the difference between 16:9 and 21:9?

A. 16:9 is standard widescreen, suitable for most content. 21:9 ultrawide is great for movies and multitasking but may show letterboxing in some games/videos.
