📐 Formula

DPI = Pixels ÷ Print Size (inches)

💡 How It Works

  • DPI (Dots Per Inch) represents the number of dots (pixels) per inch.
  • 300 DPI is the professional print standard - no visible pixels even up close.
  • 200+ DPI provides good quality at normal viewing distances.
  • Below 150 DPI, pixels may become visible and images appear blurry.
  • Most smartphone cameras (12MP+) provide sufficient resolution for 4×6 prints.
  • When photo ratio (3:2, 4:3) differs from paper ratio, cropping occurs.

FAQ

Q. Why is 300 DPI important?

A. 300 DPI is the threshold where the human eye cannot distinguish individual dots at 30cm viewing distance. Above this is considered 'photo quality'.

Q. What's the minimum resolution for 4×6 prints?

A. At 300 DPI: 1200×1800 pixels, about 2.2MP. Modern smartphones (12MP+) easily exceed this.

Q. Why does cropping occur?

A. When the photo ratio (e.g., 4:3) differs from paper ratio (e.g., 3:2). Fill mode crops; fit mode adds borders.

Q. How large can I print smartphone photos?

A. A 12MP (4000×3000) photo can print up to about 13×10 inches at 300 DPI, or 20×15 inches at 200 DPI with good quality.

Q. Why are passport/ID photo sizes different?

A. Passport photos (35×45mm) follow ICAO international standard. Different countries have their own ID photo specifications.
